After the Anglo-Nepalese War, the Kumaon hills got transferred under the rule of the British. In the year 1841 Naini Tal was discovered and hence founded by P. Barron who was a European merchant. The virgin hills appealed so much to the British that they started frequenting this town to escape from the dust and scorching summers of the northern plains. The history of the region is full of references to natural disasters encountered by it as the consequence of changing physiological conditions. In the year 1880, a devastating landslide occurred and many lives were lost. This earthquake demolished the Assembly Rooms and Naina Devi Temple very badly and left only parts of these magnificent heritage architectures for the generations to come.

Present day Nainital is a burgeoning town in terms of tourism and is largely visited by the tourists for its breathtaking natural splendor.
